Not a lot has happened in the last two weeks! But there always are a few things to share.
Mister Bat, who came here in July after falling into a forgotten oil drip pan, was released! I gave him several gentle baths in mild Dawn dish soap, rinsing him well and drying him with the smallest bath towel in the world. I made sure he had a miniature rubber ducky in the tub with him and he wore fluffy slippers while he relaxed afterwards. Well, no, but I did brush him daily to help distribute his natural oils to replenish the ones removed during the bath. He did a great job grooming himself, something I wish I could have recorded. I have never seen a bat so thoroughly clean his wings! He was a voracious eater and I made sure he was nice and fat before he returned to the wild.
For a very brief time I had a little raccoon kit here. I am licensed for rabies vector species, which includes bats, raccoons, skunks and more, but have chosen to only work with bats. This little guy needed help and had been with the finder for 2 days. Of course I was going to step in and help! He was so upset at first to be without Mama, and hungry and thirsty and, because his eyes were still closed, totally in the dark, but he soon calmed down and we had some special moments together. He was transferred to rehabber Sharon Debois, who also took 2 of the groundhogs I had earlier this year. Thank you, Sharon! I am grateful for Georgia Wildlife Network and the volunteer transportation network who transported this little nugget from me all the way across Atlanta to Temple, GA.
