Mid January 2025 – Mid February, 2025

I posted a photo of some of the bats on my Primarily 'Possums Facebook page and two people privately messaged me to point out they were not opossums. I explained that yes, those were bats, but I'm only PRIMARILY 'possums! It's been a long and mostly uneventful winter. Everyone (15 opossums and 4 bats) eats and sleeps and maybe runs on their wheels. And pooping. These are big opossums so it's lots of poop. That's a side of wildlife rehabilitation most people don't discuss but it's a fact.

The now 3 Little Old Ladies enjoyed some sun and warm weather. Sweet Pea slept, Mama zoned out, and Ila sniffed.
Ila is new, but old! She was found right down the road from me (she's the awake and curious one). She's blind but agile and engaged with the world. She even runs on the wheel!
This female Big Brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) enjoys a daily meal of crunchy, gooey mealworms and a syringe of a nutrition support called Carnivore Care.
This is a different female, but they look very similar.
And another Big Brown female!
A young Mexican Freetail bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) This little sweetie only likes mealworms guts, which I have to squeeze out like toothpaste.
The female Mexican Freetail and the male Big Brown like to cuddle. During hibernation the Big Browns, especially, will stack up and huddle close to stay warm.
Every day the opossums get "home cooked" nutritious meals. Sunday is Sardine Day, served with orange sections, a grape, and Bok Choy, which they love!
Wednesday is Mouse Day. I buy frozen mice in orders of 500. This night I was tired, so it was not terribly inspired. The vegetable of the day was sweet potato. I know it seems like I serve an awful lot of fruit, but it does get sprinkled with calcium powder.
The big boy Meatballs stayed very cozy through the cold, stuffing their houses full of pine straw. There was so much pine straw in one I don't know how an opossum fit, too! They have climbing toys and a big wheel to run on.
One of the Precious 'Possum Pentad enjoys some hardboiled egg. They have since been moved outside as they have gotten big!
One of the PPP had a bad hair day. It happens to all of us.
There has been some very creative nest building, incorporating remnants of enrichment bags.
They are very polite and well-mannered with each other, and share peacefully.
Hello!

I admit I fell for the False Spring we had for a glorious week here in Georgia.  Volunteer Rich Bergins and I removed the tarps from the enclosures, I checked out a new release site, and even prepped one of the big boy Meatballs for release.  Alas, I was wrong, and now I have to put the tarps back up and entertain everyone until March, most likely.  With the exception of the three Little Old Ladies, everyone is staying active climbing around their enclosure and running on their wheels.  I wish I had a Suzie-sized wheel to keep me active on the days it’s too unpleasant to go outside.

My friend Scarlet of Odd Paws Cat Rescue shared a video of me brushing one of the bats on Instagram, and it went viral. It's been viewed ONE MILLION times. There are over 400 comments and I've tried to answer everyone's questions (often the same question over and over). 90,000 people "liked" it! You can view it from the link at the bottom of this page and while you're there, check out some of her other the other posts and videos. You can also follow the links to my page, and see some additional photos and videos. As always, thanks for reading!
