It's been an overwhelming two weeks- and I skipped last week's post because of it. So many animals and so much goings on!
We had some releases…
…and two who preferred to come back home. They wouldn’t even stick their noses out of the carriers! They will stay here for another 2 weeks and then we will try again.
The Fabulous New Enclosure is finally ready and open for intakes, stocked with all the amenities, thanks to a generous donation by Rick and Shannon Waters, and with the help of every single volunteer I’ve had. Thank you Victor, Tabitha, Sydney, Krista, Rich, Sharon, and everyone else who helped make this possible.
The 8 skunks are doing great! Growing, playing, and practicing their moves! They stay cool in the dirt and shade of their enclosure and come out at night to play. It’s a challenge to keep them entertained, but rotting logs, new foods, and puzzle toys are a big help.
There have been many new bat species coming into care, too.
The Mexican Freetail bat has the cutest little furry toes! They are called “freetails” because their hind patagium (skin) (butt flap) doesn’t extend all the way to the tip as it does in most other species.
I received 15 baby opossums in the last two weeks, a litter of 9 and one of 6. They are all about the same size so they are bunking together.
PJ is so happy for all the support and love you’ve shown us this year. We’re on the second round of babies and still getting in bunnies and bats. Opossums and bunnies will keep coming in through August. It doesn’t quiet down until about October. I will continue having SO much to share!
