Winter update December 2024 – January 2025

Some of our readers know that cold in the South can be a truly unpleasant and even dangerous time. But this blog is supposed to be happy updates and news, so it will have to suffice to say Winter is not a great time to be inside or outside.

My volunteers and I tarped and re-tarped all 4 outside enclosures. This one has since received additional tarping and wind-proofing on all sides.
These two have been even further insulated. Cooter is by himself in the tall one and Joey in the lower one. They have heated nest boxes and I'm working on a way to attach heated water bottles like I have on the other two.
Two of the three boy Meatballs each have an insulated house like these, purchased for us by wonderful supporters!
The two girl Meatballs have densely packed their insulated house.
Big Boy Meatball doesn't fit into this nest box anymore! He's HUGE.
On warmer days, I've been bringing The Precious Possum Pentad out for play time in Tova's Treehouse.
They enjoy climbing up and down the tree trunk placed in the middle.
All the way to the roof!
They ran up and down the ramps.
I was invited to give a program on "The Amazing Opossum" for the Jefferson Public Library Homeschool Group on January 14th.
After the presentation, the families made enrichment bags and boxes for the opossums.
They made enough to keep the inside opossums happily occupied for weeks!
There were some very creative designs and a lot of thought was put into making it fun for the babies.
They loved the first night of enrichment boxes.
This one seems pretty straightforward but is secretly great training for picking up bugs and snacks off the ground.
On other nights, they get a rotating variety of puzzle feeders.
All 3 inside cages have been modified into triple-deckers. They've been adapted even further to accommodate a medium sized wheel (not pictured).
On Christmas, they even got their own little tree.

The two elderly opossums, Mama and Sweet Pea, are good friends and keep each other warm.  Mama has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure, sadly common among older opossums.  She is on oral and injectable medications and receives subcutaneous fluids twice a day.  She doesn’t mind and keeps on sleeping (she’s on the left).

We have had snow once already this winter and are due again this week. Everyone will sleep through it, waking up to get warm and nutritious meals, but undoubtedly climbing right back into bed. The truly wild wildlife have heated birdbaths or water bowls, well stocked feeders, and houses made from old coolers. As long as we don't lose power and the pipes don't freeze, we all should be ok. Thanks for reading, and I hope you are enjoying wintertime where you are!
