Releases galore!

Almost everyone is released back to the wild- including Molly and her babies. Well, some of her babies. These releases come just in time for the second round of baby season.

What felt like just weeks later, after over 2 months rehabilitation, here is Molly in her carrier, with her babies, ready to release.
Molly left within minutes of my driving away from the release location where she was found. She ignored the plate of food and the den she had been using. She walked off with her babies on her back and disappeared into the woods. But she left half her babies- 4 of them- behind. Now I will finish raising them.
Warrior is one of our new friends. After his Mom and siblings were run over by a car, he was seen running down the road crying. He is safe and loved here now.
Meet the Petal Pals! They are a combination of 2 litters. All needed tube feeding for the first 2 weeks but are eating on their own now. They grow so quickly at this age.
The Currahee Club came to me via Tiffany. Thank you so much! She drove an hour to get them to me. Their Mom was caught in a "humane trap" that wasn't checked in time. When the setter of the trap finally checked, Mama was dead and 7 babies were still trying to nurse. Legislative changes made this year in Georgia laws make this year round trapping and killing of opossums legal. However, it is against the law to not check your traps in a timely manner. This was preventable and beyond sad.
A happier photo- this released baby is excited to locate a tunnel. Opossums love tunnels and other people's dens.
This one decided to immediately jump in the pond for a swim! Opossums are excellent swimmers. Even as Mamas with pouch babies! They can zip up their pouches with a ring of strong muscles and the babies stay dry.
Look, substitute Mon, I can climb high!
I will just contemplate this big, tall tree.
And I will hide in the grass.
Singleton Jacob, named after the kind Animal Control officer who brought him to me, is too big to be with the babies in the incubator. He is in a cage with room to climb, with Warrior.
This opossum was released with his littermates on a property where the landowner will provide food, such as kibble and apples, as long as they want.
Tova's Treehouse! A wonderful, big-hearted and generous girl named Tova raised a staggering amount of money for Primarily Possums. I thought instead of using it for operating expenses, I would have another pre-release enclosure built. Richie built it and Eli helped set it up. I'm excited to decorate it just like a treehouse. It will have an actual tree in the middle for climbing, lots of ramps and shelves, rope and wood bridges (thank you Rich Bergins!) and of course, many places to hide.
The sweetest berry of them all. This is very small and probably a runt, Berry. Cars were driving over her, straddling her. She was so lucky Roxanne realized she wasn't a leaf, but a baby! She daringly stopped traffic to rescue her. Berry is VERY small and still in a fragile state of health.

That's all for this update. Somehow I managed to suddenly have 25 opossums, almost overnight. I'll be capping this at 30, instead of the crazy 60 I had earlier in the season. Once the Rubies and Dudley are released- hopefully this week, my outdoor enclosures will be empty and can be deep cleaned again. I'd like to thank all my volunteers, especially Rich, Dawn and Sydney, whose steadfast and reliable help have helped in so many ways. I'll see you in 2 weeks!
