2022 Year end report

2022 was a busy year at Primarily 'Possums!

In 2022 I took in 262 animals, and helped just as many over the phone or Internet.

Primarily ‘Possums is listed on Google Maps, so many callers find me that way.

This webpage has also helped finders connect with me, and, of course, Facebook has been very useful especially in the word-of-mouth department.

Getting the word out that I exist and am here to help is a perennial effort but I’m making headway.

Please spread the word there is trained and equipped help out there for all wildlife

Virginia Opossums

Primarily ‘Possums is not just the name, it’s what I do!  Since the inception of my wildlife rehabilitation journey in 2014, I’ve helped over 1200 opossums.

In 2022, I took in 133 adorable babies and injured adult opossums.

Eastern Cottontail rabbits

Cottontail rabbits is another species I take in frequently.

In 2022 I took in 38, which is about my average.  Since 2014, I’ve helped over 200 of these gentle creatures.

Armadillos

Armadillos are a new favorite species of mine!  I took in 6 last year, and 2 a year in the last 3 years.

Bats

Bats are now frequent visitors here.  Since purchasing the Bat Yurt with your generous donations, I now have a safe and suitable space for them to practice flight and bug catching.

I have taken in 7 species of bats over the years, the most numerous being Big Brown Bats.  Last year I helped 31 bats from 4 species (Big Brown, Mexican Free-tailed, Eastern Red, and Tri-colored)

Everyone else

The rest of the intakes included the following mammal species:

Eastern chipmunks, Eastern Gray squirrels, Southern Flying squirrels, rats, mice, and a shrew.

Avian intakes (I do have my USFWS migratory bird permit, I just don’t specialize in birds anymore):

Barn swallow, Blue Jay, Carolina wrens, a grackle, a screech owl, two Northern mockingbirds, two Rough winged swallows, and a mourning dove.

2023 has been a great year so far with 2 Carolina wrens, a pigeon, a Big brown bat, two opossums and the fabulous Miss Fox.

I’ll continue to update you on what’s going on this week in wildlife here at Primarily ‘Possums.

I hope you’re as proud of my 2022 year end report as I am!
